Florida Gov Ron DeSantis has demanded local county and city officials provide information on what he calls “all actions” including regulations, rules, commands fines, or restrictions on persons, businesses, or other entities that are related to COVID-19”.
DeSantis has previously refused to enact a statewide mask order, leaving local governments to decide on it for themselves, even while muzzling his own county health departments. It’s unclear now why he has made this demand.
The day before his announcement, he met with bar owners in St. Petersburg to discuss a reopening. At the meeting, he stated the decision to close local beaches in Florida, “was not evidence-based.”
Although the City of St. Petersburg requires people to wear masks in business that are open to the public, the bar owners and DeSantis himself appeared to wear no masks throughout the public meeting while not maintaining six feet of social distancing.
St. Petersburg Mayor, Rick Kriseman was quoted, “Here’s an example of what not to do, especially in Pinellas County and St. Petersburg, where our mask mandate & policies have led the way in the fight against COVID,” Kriseman, a Democrat, tweeted,. “We believe in science here, governor. We also believe in leading by example.”
According to Yahoo News, “At a Jacksonville nursing home, DeSantis told visitors to quite literally embrace their loved ones. “Hell, hug ’em,” he urged. “I think that you could do that,” he said, as long as people wore face masks — and didn’t sneeze. As he spoke, a poster urging social distancing loomed over his left shoulder. Not a single health department official contradicted him, because not a single health department official was there.”
